The Environment ministry in Mauritius has hinted of plans to introduce new regulations on toxic wastes by next April. Environment minister Rajesh Bhagwan said the envisaged regulations would prohibit the disposing of toxic waste at places other than officially selected sites. It would also make pre-treatment an obligatory in the disposal of waste. Mauritius produces several kinds of toxic waste emitted mainly by textile and paint factories, electroplating and galvanising enterprises, battery and drug manufacturers, soap and detergents industries, and oil refineries.
